Scattered in various parts of the village, orchards, fields, pastures, are wells,
most within short distances within the village. Today, of course, many sources of water supply have dried up due to the drilling that lowered the water table, so the wells hold water mainly in the winter.
Most of the wells are built with stonework, which goes to the surface of the ground and a depth of 5 to 12 meters. In wells from which the Protaeans once drew drinking water, the stonework was made of limestone more than half a meter above the ground surface and within a radius of 1.5-2.0 meters around the rim, to protect the water from stormwater erosion.
These wells were mainly private and few in public places that are still preserved ("Platanou", "Agias Varvaras", "Agias Paraskevis"). In some of them, there were large carved stone troughs built in next to these wells, which were used for watering large animals, horses, mules, etc. Most of the troughs we saw then date back to the beginning of the 19th century.
Water was pumped in two ways. The classic way is by hand with the help of a bucket tied to a rope, which was lowered into the well and raised by muscle power without the help of any mechanism. For the greater depths they used manganese which was originally wooden and later iron. Choosing the right location for digging a well was of great importance for the constant presence of abundant and healthy water.
The morphology of the ground usually made the presence of an underground water vein evident (ditches, surrounding hills, overlying mountain). The correct substylization of the walls of the vertical cylinder was also important. Mining a well was a grueling and very dangerous job. The risk of the walls collapsing during the excavation was real.
